Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Penguin Group launches the National Golden Ticket Sweepstakes to help First Book

“If I were a headmaster, I would get rid of the history teacher, and get a chocolate teacher instead and my pupils would study a subject that affected all of them.” Guess who made this daring yet imaginative declaration? None other than master storyteller, Roald Dahl. It’s his immense love of chocolate paired with memorable school time adventures that gave birth to Dahl’s second children’s novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, in 1964.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of this ever-popular tale. The story follows five lucky children who win the Golden Ticket Competition and are invited to tour Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The competitors stand to inherit Wonka’s empire, provided he or she can overcome each challenge and emerge as the winner.

In honor of this special occasion, Penguin Young Readers Group joins hands with world-renowned candy emporium Dylan’s Candy Bar and the nonprofit First Book to launch a “National Golden Ticket Sweepstakes” in April. Readers have the opportunity to relive the moment created by the delightful classic five decades ago.

To sweeten the deal, Penguin is offering five grand-prize winners the chance to be Willy Wonka for a day and operate a Dylan’s candy store in New York City. Winners will receive two round-trip tickets to the Big Apple, complimentary passes to the musical, Matilda, and $5,000 worth of books to fill their school libraries. For each sweepstake entry, Penguin will make a donation to First Book.

Penguin Group (USA) Inc., a global leader in children’s publishing, is organizing the sweepstakes to assist First Book’s efforts in making available books and educational materials to children in need. It is a fitting tribute to an author who had a passion for teaching kids to become readers and who truly believed in the importance of reading.
