Financial Aid for College
February 13th, 2010 by Jane Schneider
My son turns 15 this spring, so we’re beginning to think about college. For him, it’s daydreaming about where he’d like to attend. For me, it’s answering the million dollar question: How will I pay for it? As a single parent, I’m busy setting aside money for college and retirement. That’s why I was relieved to learn about the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation, a state agency geared to helping parents through the quagmire of aid programs by offering accurate, uncomplicated access to financial aid information.
The agency oversees the administration of the HOPE scholarships, state grants, and even helps parents fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), computations used by federal and state government to determine your financial need. Their website is well-organized, and offers a host of links to other sites that will help you prepare for college.
Don’t forget to check out College Goal Sunday, February 14, from 2 to 4 p.m., when agency staff will be on-hand to answer questions and help you fill out FAFSA paper work. Locations include: White Station High, Tennessee Technology Center of Memphis, Southwest Community College at Macon and Le Moyne Owen College. To learn more, check the website or call (800) 342-1663
