Batty About Books
December 9th, 2009 by Jane Schneider
As a journalist, I’m always encouraging kids to read and write. Of course, it can be a trick for those who are less than enthusiastic, but once you find stories that fire up their imagination, look out! That’s why I like this new title, Books Make Me Happy, an interactive journal by bestselling author Judy Pelikan.
Here, kids can keep a reading log, write descriptions about their favorite stories, draw pictures, even add colorful bookplates to their books. Each section opens with a child’s drawing, done in embroidery, and, includes several logs as well as imaginative prompts with questions like, “Does your family read?” and “Have your mom write about her favorite book.” Charming illustrations provide ideas for each section.
Writing and drawing about their favorite stories is sure to make your children life-long readers. Check it out! • Books Make Me Happy by Judy Pelikan. Workman Publishers, workman.com. $9.95
