Editor’s Note: August 2009
August 1st, 2009 by Jane SchneiderMy son lays curled up on the bed in his bedroom, sequestered as he often is these days, being in the throes of adolescence. His boyish face is beginning to lose the plumpness of youth; his jaw line is becoming more angular, mature. It was around spring break that his voice began to break. Since he turned 14 this March, he’s rounded the corner and officially entered his teen years.
How is it possible, the swift passage of time?
In the background I as I write this, I can hear the jumpy soundtrack from Slumdog Millionaire. Once upon a time we listened to storytelling tales about Paul Bunyan or silly songs from Sesame Street and Blues Clues. Now it’s more often the throbbing rhythm of hip hop or his metronymic practice of the drums. I don’t mind either though, all that music fills our house with life. But finding points of connection, that can be the real challenge at this stage of life. There’s so much I still want to share with him, but often I have to meet him where he is and hope he’ll be interested in what I have to offer.
Actually, that’s sometimes the case in my job as the magazine editor as well. We’ve got lots of good information that we pull together each month but the challenge is making sure we meet you where you’re at, both with news that’s relavent to your life and the way it’s delivered. To that end, I think we’ve hit on a way to make that connection easier.
Starting this month, you can pick up a copy of Memphis Parent at your favorite Kroger grocery store. We’re already available in roughly 500 locations around the city, including pediatric offices, schools, hospitals, day care centers, and libraries. But when you’ve got hungry kids at home, the grocery is one place you must frequent with true regularity. So I am excited that we’ll be at the entrance of markets; it should make it easier to find us at the beginning of each month.
We want to be a part of your life. Check out one of the following locations and pick us up. I think you’ll be glad you did.
