Best of Luck, Bill Lunn
April 17th, 2009 by Jane SchneiderI’m a bit of a media maven. Having reported for television in Boston before moving to Memphis, I really enjoy keeping up with some of the local TV talent. So when news of Bill Lunn’s departure from WMC-TV 5 came down earlier this year, I was bummed. Bill is not only a talented journalist, but he and his wife Sheri are good folks.
So I’m pleased to report that Bill just accepted a new job as the anchor for KSTP-KSTC, the ABC affiliate in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota (a top 10 broadcast market).
It’s a logical fit. Lunn honed his reporting skills (not to mention his love of ice fishing) in Duluth, Minnesota, before relocating to Memphis as an anchor/reporter at WPTY-Ch. 24 in 1995. There, he and co-anchor Rene Malone produced a well-paced, solid newscast. He worked under general manager Jack Peck for seven years before jumping to WMC-TV Ch. 5 in December 2002, where he remained until layoffs sent him packing last December.
When the word came down, the couple remained philosophical, choosing instead to celebrate Sheri’s recent hire as a director of communications at Briarcrest Christian Schools. The layoff afforded Bill some well-deserved time off which he spent with their three boys, and sending tapes out to news directors around the country. Despite the gloomy economy, station heads in Minneapolis saw in Bill what always shines through: his journalistic integrity and solid newsgathering skills.
I hate goodbyes. Instead, I’ll simply say thanks for lending your talent to the Memphis community, guys. It was a great ride. You will be missed.
