Memphis has rich resources for helping children grow into the arts. Local artists, museums, and performance groups offer a mix of classes and events for all ages. Does your child like to dance, sing, act, paint, sculpt, or make music? Kids here have many opportunities to find fun and joy in the creative process.

Memphian Whendy Merryman offers summer Art Camps, specializing in clay, ceramics, and painting for children ages 6 to 12. Lil’ Bit Art is for ages 2 to 6 and classes for ages 6 and up are offered at her residential studio in the fall and spring. These classes explore all media and teach basic art principles.

The Brooks offers Family Days, a free morning of activities tied to a special exhibition. The fun includes hands-on art projects, performances, and gallery walks. Activity guides are available to help parents share art viewing with children. Tours and hands-on activities are available for school groups and homeschoolers. Education programs include Creation Station, for older elementary students and their families, and Storytime, for preschool to elementary-age children. Both programs take place in the gallery with reading and a craft.

Several programs run year-round for children and adults with this professional theatre company. Saturday Morning Matinee Series features area storytellers, musicians, and performers. Kids learn all about theater at the After School Acting Program (offered at satellite locations around Memphis) for ages 7 to 12. Teens get into the act with Teens In Theatre (TNT). On Saturdays, check out Theatre School for ages 5 to 17. Summer Youth Theatre Conservatory offers one-, two-, or three-week programs for ages 5 to 17.

Fun in Theatre summer camp at Germantown Community Theatre is for children grades pre-K to 12. Students learn all elements of theatre from dancing and acting to crafting props and writing skits. They also offer fall/spring Saturday morning acting classes. The children’s show Wiley and the Hairy Man will be staged in early August.

There are plenty of adventures for children at this hands-on discovery museum. In the Cityscape gallery, kids can try out grown-up activities like going to the bank, grocery shopping, or dressing in costume for on-stage fun. The museum also includes a 50-foot model of the Mississippi River where kids can float a boat or and explore an airplane cockpit.

The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, a former private residence situated on 17 acres of gardens, features a permanent collection of French and American Impressionists art and German porcelain. The Dixon hosts a family concert by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in the fall. A summer camp for ages 6 to 12, “Paint It! Plant It!,” July 7-11, combines art and horticulture activities. A new Mini-Masters class is offered on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. for kids ages 2 to 4. Reservations required. Family Day on July 19 complements the gallery’s “Passport to Paris” exhibition with printmaking, music and crafts. Tennessee’s largest fine-arts museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art houses an outstanding collection of fine art dating from antiquity to the present, and hosts world-class traveling exhibitions. Exhibits at the National Ornamental Metal Museum celebrate the creativity and versatility of metalwork. GPAC presents world-class artists and a variety of performances that will delight audiences of all ages. In the Family Program series, Don Quixote will be performed by the Russian National Ballet Theatre on Jan. 18. Audiences will enjoy a lively score and spectacular virtuoso dancing. ”Universe of Dreams,” a multi-media concert exploring the mysteries of the universe through poetry, prose and music and presenting dazzling images from the Hubble Space Telescope, follows Jan. 23. In Farfalle (Butterflies), technology becomes art in an intriguing installation in GPAC’s Black Box Theatre, April 25 and 26. Butterflies and gardens come to life through a combination of vivid projections, advanced sensors, sound and live actors to produce a unique theatrical experience.
The widely acclaimed “Peanut Butter and Jam Sessions,” which introduce children ages 3 to 8 to a wide variety of musical instruments and styles, returns for its 13th season with sessions at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on select Saturdays. Ticket prices are $8 for children, free for parents.

The Germantown Symphony Orchestra (GSO) performs its annual Holiday and Spring concerts at the Germantown Performing Arts Center and has several programs that feature local youth performers. Summer programs include Children’s Opera Camp for ages 8 to 12, and Teen Opera Camp for ages 13 to 18. Campers learn all aspects of putting on an opera including voice and acting coaching sessions, staging, make-up, set design, and costuming. Each camp concludes with a performance of an opera for kids or scenes from several well-known operas. Auditions for camps held in the spring. The Dreamers, Doers & Devils! 2008-2009 Season begins with Verdi’s La Travoata starring Kallen Esperian, followed by Scott Joplin & Treemonshina, and Gounod’s Faust. Season ticket packages start at $39. All mainstage performances take place at The Orpheum Theatre.
